Inland Revenue Enquiries

Following the introduction of self assessment, which in part is intended to move much of the clerical work previously carried out at tax offices to taxpayers and their advisers, the Revenue have a substantial pool of staff available for enquiry work.

Given the Government's spending plans and the deficit between taxation income and government expenditure it is clear that one way of filling the gap is by ensuring that taxpayers pay their liabilities in full. To this end all taxpayers can expect to have their affairs under scrutiny by the Revenue in one way or another.

Some enquiries can arise because of some factor evident from your return such as a lower profit margin when compared with others in a similar line of business, or where your lifestyle does not apparently correspond with the level of your declared income.

Certain enquiries can be on a specific 'aspect' of your affairs which can be straightforward to answer or can involve consideration of points of tax law. Other enquiries can arise on a random basis. Many enquiries can be complex and long drawn out however our aim in such matters is to ensure that all enquiries are settled in the shortest possible time with the least inconvenience to the client both in terms of time and tax exposure.
